Welcome AoD Refugees

Hello and welcome to a hastily-created blog to serve former followers of AoD and any other random rugby union fanatics as well.

Now that rugby season is upon us, it seemed intolerable not to have somewhere to share our pain, our hopes and our squabbles.

Please pile in BTL! There will no doubt be much tinkering with the site. Suggestions for improvements are welcome but may be discarded out of hand. We do not possess Sag-like wizardry.

I think I’ll leave Loch Lomond trips to winter time.

@Flair, The Plan was for me to be in East Lothian by now, but who knew that selling a house was a frustrating and stressful affair? Our buyer dropped out ten weeks after us accepting their offer and now we are starting again from square one, plus the timing now isn’t great, with people wondering if they should wait until after the whole B thing settles down.
If we don’t get another buyer in the next couple of weeks we will wait until next Spring.
The upshot is that I won’t be in East Lothian to meet you unfortunately.
You have plenty of choice there, I believe there are 21 golf courses in the county.

If Deebee is around, or Geko or TomP, what are the chances of Kwagga Smith making it to Japan? He was signed for Edinburgh as world cup cover but recent results suggest he may be with the Boks squad, even with Kolisi’s return.

Since last chatting I have fallen in love with Baroque music and have been having a great time exploring the genre.
Here’s a little taste for you and others:

Ticht – I’m not sold on Kwagga. Matera overshadow him and while he is a tough nut, he still gets thrown around a bit. I’d rather have Rassie take Marcel Coetzee. Doesn’t answer your question though.

I’m with you, Gecko. There’s a lot to like about him but there’s good competition there.

Only saw the highlights from Saturday but a terrific win, matching what Allister Coetzee’s 2017 team did.

Faf got a bit of stick from what I read because of some poor kicks and dumb play.

How about that Herschel Jantjies, though? Another top player from Llanelli.

  6. TomP – Shocker Llanelli let Blommetjies go. Now spectators in SA has to look at that rubbish again.

He’ll definitely score a winning try against the Scarlets this year.

@Slade, it’s not something I’m all that familiar with, but I liked that video.

@Gecko and TomP. I’ll be happy enough if Kwagga doesn’t quite make the cut for the world cup, it’s quite possible that Edinburgh will be missing ten forwards due to international duty, and four from the back row.

  9. Kagga had a good game for the baa baas last year (I think). He might just be that type of player.

Thanks Thaum. Thanks Brookter for the heads up.
    This is great.

I’m wondering how long it will be before it’s appropriate to enquire about my reply button?

    Hope everyone is well.

Pretty pleased with England on Sunday. Lots of power and speed. Ford was great at 10 though will be jettisoned come the big games surely as he still gets knocked back in the tackle too much for Eddies liking. I hope Curry isn’t broken and Underhill can come back. If so the back row is healthier than its been for a while.

Please for Ludlum to get a game and a place on the plane. He’ll be on tackle bag duty for sure but it will be good experience for him.

Not reading too much into it mind, Wales looked out of sorts, probably tired and rusty.

I think so Ticht. Only it can’t be the case that they’re just the same otherwise I can’t believe we haven’t seen both tried together

Sorry to hear of your house travails Ticht. Selling / buying is a right pain in the hole, I imagine especially now with that B word going on. In laws are dealing with selling at the moment in England and the buyers are now playing up. some people seem to lose all reason when it comes to this stuff.

  38. Hi Ticht – Kwagga Smith has some fierce competition for the openside jersey, not least with Siya Kolisi set to return this weekend against Argentina. So, assuming that Siya stays fit, he’ll lead the side and play the big matches at least. Duane Vermeulen nailed on for Number 8 and PS DuToit for blindside. Kwagga would then be duking it out with Marcel Coetzee, Rynard Elstadt and Francois Louw for one of the other two or three back row spots. Louw covers openside and 8, as can Coetzee, so at best Kwagga needs to see of Elstadt – and he’s got the versatility the others don’t to get there. Tellingly, he was the preferred pick for the RC, so may well sneak in. Hell, in an emergency he’d even slot in on the wing!

  43. Thinking out loud*, he may be a bench option to offer a bit of variety if needed later in the game – Kwagga’s good at that. But it’s not really in the Bok DNA to take of a behemoth if you’re playing catch up and replacing him with a fleet-footed game-breaker. The usual ploy is to introduce a slightly slower, slightly less competent behemoth and then wonder why things aren’t working.

But Rassie has definitely got this group working better – so maybe there is hope!

    * For some reason, thinking out loud about back rowers is seen as strange in an open plan office.

Does anyone remember that big Canadian Norm Hadley who used to endure Inverdale as co-presenter of ‘Rugby Special’ back in the 90s?

I was shocked to read yesterday that he committed suicide in 2016.

He had become a very wealthy banker, but suffered depression, chronic pain and – according to family – CTE from concussions.
