I’m not doing well here, but the point I am grappling with is that for real racists like Trump it’s all water off a duck’s back, but for someone like Trudeau who has a sense of responsibility and shame it is career threatening. It’s like pursing and killing the mockingbird.

Aye Chimpie, but I grew up when the black and white minstrel show was normal telly.
It is really hard and I think unfair to expect someone to show the same awareness and discretion then as they might do now, especially when you see them learning and changing.
It’s weird because someone with a moral compass like Trudeau might die and disappear because of past indiscretions, but an empty, racist vessel like Trump can just shrug much worse off and get away with it.

Iks – it’s weird that you are probably right that this wouldn’t affect trump as much. If you manage to lower expectations but without the same associated cost blackface is easy to ride out.

I had a kilt as a lass; believe it was the Campbell tartan.
Apparently my grandfather once went into a kilt shop and asked for the family tartan. There was much sucking of teeth and consulting of ledgers and much dust disturbed before the elderly kiltman climbed precariously up a ladder and returned bearing said cloth.
That’s fucking hideous, said my honoured grandparent. I’m not buying that!
