Missed the first half this morning. Flicked it on early in the second, expecting to see a game already over. Instead the little guy was later than usual getting to nursery. Classic stuff. Great WC so far.

Both sides that had a 1st round bye beat sides who’d played first time out.

USA play their 1st game v England tomorrow.

Jones is talking nonsense with that 15 Donald Trumps line. Rugby’s a 23-player game at international level so that American outfit is 15 Donald Trumps a couple of Jacinda Adamseseses, 2 Cyril Ramphosas and 4 Michael D Higginseseseses.

Gecko said a while back he’d like to have seen Brits play centre, so he’s moving in the right direction. Boks will be ok – our backs are against the wall, so we’ll come out firing. Every game is now a knockout for us etc etc.

England v USA should be a snorter, with 15 Trumps against 15 Borises. I know who my money’s on:

Slade, my two favourite Dead albums are Working Man’s Dead and American Beauty. I know they are a little different from the rest of their work but I love ‘em.

I also love Blues for Allah and all the rest, mind

This subject really annoys me – because of the reportage a la tabloids.
For me, the really frightening aspect of chlorine washed chicken is not that it arrives as such on supermarket shelves, but that the standards of rearing of the birds render them so dangerous for human consumption if the are not thoroughly sterilised. Don’t get me onto cage rearing etc etc………………

The Dead are part of my life’s soundtrack, not because they were the greatest performers but because they just wanted to play and express themselves in a bewildering world.

If there are a few here who are fans of both Ken Burns and country music , then you’re in luck. New series on country music: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9708550/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Not sure if/when it’s broadcast over here, but available through the magic of the internet.

Yos, a few American FB friends have give the Ken Burns Country series a big thumbs up, I hope Netflix show it here soon

Though one person did say it went a bit heavy on Johnny Cash’s personal life at the expense of including other artists

I’ve only watched the first episode so far and thought it was great. The history of country music is something I’ve only dipped into (I’m aware of the influences but not so much the very early music), so for me it was great to have it mapped out a bit more. AND we get Dolly Parton singing acapella.

  46. Chimpie – I thought that there was something to be said for standing by the South Vietnamese who didn’t want to be communist but that wasn’t the reason the Americans really got involved.

The human stories really blew me away as well. Those who came back or the families who eventually got the letters. Also, the sheer madness at the end with soldiers, addicted to heroin, shooting officers who gave dangerous orders and the evacuation at the end.

I went to Laos in 2002 and met a guy who had shot at American planes from a cave. And another old guy who introduced himself by shouting ‘fuck Bush!’ at me from across the street. When I shouted it back he told me how he swam the Mekong to Thailand when the American planes started bombing. It was incredible to meet him. I didn’t have much to say but his story was eye opening.

From a purely military perspective I can recommend “We were Soldiers Once – and Young” by Hal Moore.
The book on which the film “Once were soldiers” was based.
It is about the founding and operations of 1st Airborne Cavalry Helicopter intrusions squads and tactics.
Horrifying really……………….unbelievable bravery in the name of stupidity.
