I went to Colston’s Primary School, during the 80s/early 90s and I had no idea the history of the name. I have learnt more about Colston in the years since I left Bristol and particularly in the past few weeks, than I ever did when I lived there.

Refit, I always thought that was the prep school for Colstons Girls when I passed by in my year in Bristol,
I lived in higher up in Redland near the Westbury Park border but spent a lot of time on the Gloucester Road and a fair few nights in the pub with the nose nearby or The Cadbury, places like that.
However, a quick google tells me it wasn’t. Well, it was but wasn’t by the time you got there.
Pleasingly, and as i’m sure you know, the name was changed in 2018 https://www.bristolpost.co.uk/news/bristol-news/colstons-primary-name-cotham-gardens-1990460
The headline on that piece is clear enough.

When I was doing my PGCE for History in Bristol in 1995/96, there was quite a push for us to learn and teach more about local stuff, as that’d get kids interested or something, and connecting that to events across the country/world. Relatively easy in Bristol, and we got a great seminar/workshop at the Bristol Records Office about Bristol and slavery. I had two teaching practices. The first was in Newport, great again for that kind of thing. The second was in a pissy little town in the accursed county of Wiltshire, not so easy.

Swindon? Being the only town in Wiltshire I can think of.

Not Swindon, no. This was a really small little place.
I played rugby in Swindon once. At a club called Supermarine.

There’s a football club called Swindon Supermarine. Didn’t know there was also a rugby club by that name.

Glorious rugby! Chiefs jerseys are an abomination, but under the circumstances we can forgive them. Just.

Not sure about forgiving those shirts but… first try, proper NH rugby by the highlanders but missed conversion from close to posts

Highlanders with a glorious driving maul try! 8-6 after 17 minutes.

I’m in a forgiving mood, Mr. C. Think I’ll adopt the Blues for this tourney. Sorry AVS.

Not sure the new referee diligence can last for too long lots of pens being given away at the breakdown
Second try for Highlanders. Converted. 15-6

First scrum after 25mins

Terrible hoist by Aaron Smith followed by a kick out on the full from a ball carried back and Cbiefs have possession just outside the Landers 22. They botch it and then refuse to tackle the Highlanders wing who dances up to halfway before knocking on.
Pretty scrappy fare, but so good to see rugby and crowds!

Nice right to left move by the chiefs in front of a nominal highlands defence to get back to 15-13

Beautiful hands by the Chiefs through a couple of phases of quick passing and they score! What do I know? 15-13 as D-Mac slots it from the touch line!

First yellow of the season, nearly a red . Chiefs take the lead from the pen. 15-16

Mitch Hunt not going to be the locals favourite player if he keeps making these poor errors

Lucky to get only a yellow in my view. D-Mac slots the penalty from the spear tackle and the Chiefs are 16-15 and a man up. Kick-off directly into touch. Not a good couple of minutes for the Highlanders.

You’re a couple of minutes ahead of my buffering stream DB. The game has been very fast, unlike my feed

No worries DB, keep it going.
It’s just sooooo good to be watching rugby again., especially watching it “with” the aod/ob mob.
There are a few new names to me in these teams

Lots of new names for me too Ticht. Surreal to see a crowd and nary a mask in sight! 22-19 after a penalty to the Chiefs for offside.

Aaron Smith takes a tap when 3 points or a kick to the corner were better options. Highlanders concede the penalty and momentum. Chiefs take it through a couple of phases and then the no look pass finds touch. Aaron Cruden enters the fray.

Interesting rule trial here – a player getting red is replaced after 20 minutes. Think that might be a good change actually.

I see the world breaking innovation of the referees enforcing the breakdown laws Sometimes beneficially as in joining rucks from side , in front.

Highlanders driving maul has been good and A Smith, one brainfart apart, has been very quick and lively behind his pack. Penalty Landers in front of the sticks and Hunt extents the lead back to six.

Revolutionary isn’t it? Enforcing the laws. Highlanders 11 should get 10 for taking D-Mac out in the air. He couldn’t get anywhere near contesting that. Yip. Yellow. Kick to inside the 22 for a Chiefs lineout.

7 phases and another penalty. Think we may have another yellow or team warning here for deliberately slowing down the ball. No yellow. Lucky boy. Chiefs opt for the scrum penalty about 12m out!

They cock it up, scrappy ball and concede the penalty. Should’ve gone to the corner if they weren’t taking the 3.

Great penalty up to the Chiefs 10m line. Quick off the top, some quick phases and then pinged for holding on. Chiefs with lineout just outside the Highlanders 22.

14 phases, help up over the line and opt for another scrum penalty. 10 to go.

Highlanders sneak it by a point! Very entertaining in the end. For once, ssying that rugby was the winner doesn’t sound silly. New Zealand and their Covid strategy and adherence were the biggest winners though.

Lived in village called Wroughton on the outskirts of Swindon. My ex still lives there in rapturous joy. She told me a couple of weeks ago that in the 2 care homes in Swindon there were 14 and 17 covid-related deaths respectively.
