  1. Thauma, we’re just not really built for the cold here, unless you’re from the Karoo where it snows every year. 10⁰ in Joburg is cold!

I am unfortunate in that I have a very English skin: burn and peel after a couple of hours in the sun. I have to use Factor 30 at least if out for an afternoon at the beach.

  2. Just been sent a picture by our neighbour in Clarens, which is a little town in the mountains just north of Lesotho. It is -16⁰ this morning. That Irish beach….

Had a camping holiday round round SW Ireland during a heatwave around twenty years ago. Spent about 40 minutes to an hour swimming in the sea off the Beara penninsula . Spent the next 3 hours shivering uncontrollably in a hot tent tucked up inside a winterweight sleeping bag, wearing a wooly hat.

  4. Picture outside one the restaurants in Clarens this morning – plenty more and lots of video footage of snow falling in much of the southern and central parts of South Africa.

There was a bit of text on the address to resize the pic. I just deleted that so the address ended in .jpg.

Thaum, agree about Nesbo’s books. His cover of Macbeth is excellent.

I’ve swum at Kinsale and Clonakilty and both were ok. Bantry, which is just south of Beara, on the same trip was cold.

Was talking to my mum about her childhood trips to Bangor, Co Down with my grandparents. She said there’d be hordes of kids in Pickie Pool and she was encouraged to dive in. It was horrendously cold.

My mother’s trips would have been longer holidays, OT, but thanks for the thought.

Apparently the song is really about Rhyl, but it doesn’t fit into the lyrics quite so well. It would also have to mention the Sun Centre and memories related to verrucas and effluent.

There’s a more difficult version of the second song. But Tommy Makem sang it and the Dubliners too back in the day.

We had a Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem LP from the 60s when I was a lad that mentions their membership of the IRA, which was a bit strange for me to read in the 1980s

Just emerging from the rabbit hole of trying to ‘support’ Mrs CMW’s application for student finance. I think it’s safe to say the system is not geared to dealing with mature students whose partners have had loans/grants in paper rather than on-line dealings with them (or their predecessor organisations) 25 years ago.

Mike Blair has been appointed head coach at Embra.

I wonder if that has a couple of recently departed players wishing they’d kept their powder dry for a bit.

Anyway, bygones, Blair always comes across as a thinker rather than a shouter, if we can keep a nuggety edge and up-skill a few of those backs, giving them a bit of licence to play what is in front of them, then at least they might be worth watching

Hopefully he’ll have the same or similar effect on Edinburgh that Toonie did with Glasgow.

  30. So, just noticed a significant drop in the covid cases data in the UK in the same week we went full Texas. Think it just goes to show that you can trust people to act responsibly. And if they can do this with covid then they can do this with shotguns.

More seriously, is it too early to celebrate and just a blip or can I break out the carling?

I have been kicked or kneed in the nuts a handful of times over the years, purposefully or otherwise, rugby, cricket balls, scuffles etc but the worst testicular jolt by a long way was jumping into the River Wharfe one lovely sunny day in April, many years ago, Probably wasn’t too far off inhaling a load of ice cold water and sinking to the bottom for ever just to get rid of the pain.

Yup, Boks by a few I reckon.

“I have been kicked or kneed in the nuts”

That’s no use to Craigs. He likes to be kicked in the nuts himself before he can celebrate with his Carling.
