I hadn’t realised Upminster wasn’t even a top league team. It does seem a little excessive getting an international player in. Having said that, they could tap up my mate Steven who’s a Czech international and would be far cheaper.
When I arrived in South Africa, I went to my nearest cricket club to see if they had a social side. The first team were playing and the standard looked a bit tasty, even more so when Albie Morkel (Morne’s brother) came on to bowl for the opposition. The left-hander facing him some of the time would have been a young Aiden Markram.
The coach asked what level I played at and I said I wanted social cricket. He gave me the number of the 7th team captain. I phoned him up and he told me “It was social cricket but we play to win”. Their definition of social cricket was bringing your own beers to the game in a cooler. The couple of games I played were as way down the order batter (never got in) and they gave me one over (1 wicket) in the first game when it was clear that the other team were not going to get enough runs and were 8 wickets down.
We had a Zimbabwe Under 19 player net with us a few times. He played for the 4ths who were in the 2nd Division and 2 leagues above us.
In international cricket news: blog favourite Saba Davizi got an unbeaten 98 earlier for the Czech Republic against Gibraltar. A tremendous drop in the 20th over, dodgy run out of NZ-raised Dylan Steyn were other highlights.
A phenomenal effort from the guys in the 1st innings against Bulgaria in the ECI Valetta Cup
SabawoOn Davizi 115* (59) & Dylan Steyn 106 (55) with the 3rd highest opening partnership in Men’s T20I’s 220!
I’ve seen Total Recall (which I quite liked the premise of, or maybe I’m confusing it with something else) and Basic Instinct, or at least some parts of it. The rest, not.
“At its Annual Meeting in Dublin, the World Rugby Council unanimously approved the staging of Rugby World Cup in the following countries, delivering a golden decade for the sport:
England to host Rugby World Cup 2025 (women’s)
Australia to host Rugby World Cup 2027 (men’s) and 2029 (women’s)
USA to host Rugby World Cup 2031 (men’s) and 2033 (women’s)”
Great news for England as the USA is awarded RWC 2031. Meaning in just 9 years time they’ll no longer be the only host nation to go out in the pool stages.
Seen three and a half of Verhoeven’s classics: Total Recall, Basic Instinct, Robocop, and parts of Showgirls before I fell asleep. The rest sound like they’re in a similar vein, and I’m wondering if the critic didn’t lose a bet when he was tasked with ranking his ‘best’ films. The reviews are as flimsy as most of the plots and I see it’s not open for comments!
I’ve seen the same ones as Deebee. Except I haven’t seen Robocop and I’m not certain if the thing I think was Showgirls until I drunkenly fell asleep mightn’t have been something else.
Genuinely can’t remember if I saw Total Recall at the cinema or on video round a friend’s house. Definitely saw Basic Instinct at the cinema when I was about 15.
ps, I also don’t remember much, if anything, about Total Recall, but I think it had something to do with Virtual Reality? Seem to remember liking it. Unironically.
Fuxakes Eddie, the guy hit his shoulder directly on the player’s face with his arm tucked into his side, that is a shoulder charge according to the laws, the height is only a secondary factor in that
Dragons roar back into it! 8-10 with the kick to come! And does so with the last kick of the half! Didn’t see the first 38 minutes, but hopefully (from comments above) the second half will be better.
RIP Fred Ward. Pardon my French and all that. Think it was Sag was a big fan of Tremors though it could also have been The Cat. And me for that matter.
You know Aussie rugby has hit rock bottom and is still digging when they’ve pinched the horrible bloke on the PA from the IPL to shout “New! South! Wales!” over and over again to try to whip up the crowd as they slowly capitulate to yet another Kiwi side. Crap music is bad enough, but having some tosser screaming at you to chant the name of your state over and again in case you drink too much Foster’s and need to remind Uber where you live after the match is beyond redemptive.
Jed Holloway has had a fine game for the Tahs tonight, but it’ll be remembered for one thing: taking a quick goal line drop out, trying to kick it shallow and booting it out next to the in-goal flag, 10m behind him! Gives the Canes the last minute scrum 5m out, with a 4 point advantage. Game over.
Lyon get away with one, after Hougaard knocks on (more accurately his arm hit the ball after being knocked on by the Lyon player, but they all count): the Wasps hooker sells the dummy of the day and saunters through under the posts after that build up, but no bragging rights for him as it stays 20-11 to Lyon into the last 10 minutes.
Bah! Missing it. Bloody room service wants to clean my room, so I had to leave just as I tuned into the game. Nothing on telly here, so I’m watching on my laptop, but the bar doesn’t have a place to plug it in and I thought I’d only be about 20 minutes but found some lovely cold beer to take the edge off the humidity and heat, so am on number three now. I think that means I’m at fault, not housekeeping.

BB, he’d spend 8 pages writing stuff about Denise Richards in her underwear and how people don’t understand it’s a satire.

Oops, another Friday has sneaked up without me noticing. Well, the Leinster v Toulouse match should be tasty. I’m going for home advantage (just).
Meanwhile it’s Dragons v Cardiff.

Think the dull rugby would be way better than the toe-curling, OTT drivel Supersport thinks is inspirational advertising.

This is a very physical game between Lyon and Wasps. Some great carries, but also some great running lines, especially for the try by the Lyon 10.
