Was up in Belfast earlier today. Lovely to be there again, so interesting to walk around and have a chat with people. Thought I saw Larry and MickyNumbers around midday in the Cathedral Quarter but then I realised the two drunk lads having a fight were Polish. Went to St George’s Market as well and then down the Ormeau Rd, left-hand side, until I hit Rugby Avenue and past the Holylands before going through the Gardens to the University and Methody and then turning back to hit the bookstores on Botanic Gardens. Then back up to Keats and Chapman for some more bargains

On the Ormeau Rd there was a name I recognised on a shop so I slowed and then it was confirmed why I remembered the name as it was a place where 5 people had been murdered in a massacre. On the next corner was a pub. I didn’t spot it when I passed but there was a plaque outside there as well. 18 years before the pub had been bombed and another 5 people lost their lives. It was a horrible reminder for me of what mustn’t happen again.

That was the best bit of skill in this final, and Lyon get another try! They are running away with it at the moment. Toulon big names haven’t turned up.

Plus Etzebeth should have had a red for a late hit, and the player he hit (Niniashvili?) should have been taken off the field immediately.

Very disappointed by Etzebeth with that clearout. Always liked him as a player, he is a machine, but the little wing had just stopped him dead in his tracks and dumped him with a ferocious tackle, and it was a nasty piece of revenge. Cowardly hit on a defenceless player half his size. Was actually hoping that one of the Lyon players might be retiring after this game, and would take the opportunity to walk up to him after the final whistle, head butt him, and kick him in the balls a couple of times while he lay on the ground, because thats what he deserved.

There was a bit of chat on BT Sport before the game about how Etzebeth could be an ‘enforcer’ like Bakkies was, but wouldn’t be able to do the dirty stuff because “he wouldn’t get away with it now.” He got away with it last night.

Didn’t see the dirty as I went to bed at HT. But I am sure the collective blog wisdom is correct.

Says something when the first mention of James Lowe is in the second half. Very well contained by LaRo so far through starvation of ball

Well done LARo. They were very fortunate to gain the field position when the ball was over the line and heading out only to bobble back on to the Leinster player. They never let Leinster out of their half after that. They had completely neutered the Leinster attack so deserved their 3-0 victory (SH scoring)

Sextron saying “there were a few thigs at the end I didn’t understand.” Maybe he means he didn’t know why Leinster didn’t get a yellow card near the end?

Tight game and very interesting. Barnes’s reluctance to show a yellow card to either side for repeated penalties was strange. Some good performances on both sides – very pleasing for Raymond Rhule to have scored such a cracker and to win. Unfortunately, Ross Byrne was a disaster for Leinster when he came on.

There was a moment there just after the match was over when ROG approached Sexton for a handshake. Sexton’s attitude was all fuck off, although he did shake with a bad grace.

ROG then gave an extensive interview, which was quite interesting. He got hijacked by the players in mid-interview; they sprayed him with champagne. BOD was much more gracious with ROG than Sexton.

Short interview after with Cullen. I used to refer to him as ‘ugly bloke’, but as he’s got older his face has got really interesting, and some photographer should make good use of it. He showed class as well.

Probably the most worrying sight of the whole day was Healey thinking he was a Liverpool Spice Boy from the 1996 FA Cup final in his white suit.

To be fair to Sexton, ROG mentioned some kind of 50/50 decision that went LAR’s way in the final moments. I didn’t notice it. But probably Leinster should have had a yellow before that anyway.

Also, there’s probably a big difference between being a player and a coach in the post-match interview stakes in terms of how gracious you might be.

  49. La Roche deserved the win, it never really looked to me like Leinster were going to win, even when they took the lead.

I can’t help but feel the French side lacked some flair, West poses no threat from fly half and the wings, who do look dangerous lived off chances of their own making

    Well done La Rochelle!

Some right old nonsense from the Channel 4 commentators I have to say. Watchable game though with a surprising number of basic mistakes. Happy with the winner though obviously it could have gone the other way. Agree with Ticht that they’d do well to get better ball to those wingers more often, but I guess it didn’t matter in the end.
