Autumn Internationals: Third Week

Being short of time as I’m travelling tomorrow, I have shamelessly stolen Deebee7‘s prognostications.

But first, I’m sure we can all rejoice that Stuart McCloskey has kept his starting place on the Ireland team with Aki relegated to the bench.

Your results for the weekend:

Tonga v Uruguay: Tonga by 14 – Tonga are enjoying playing against Spanish speaking sides, and will dish the pain once again!

Italy v South Africa: South Africa by 4 – Boks have had two narrow losses and will look to get their tour on the board, with four straight losses for the two sides so far. Bench to haul them over the line.

Wales v Georgia: Wales by 19 – good win for Wales last week and they’ll look to build on that (and cement their place in the 6N at Georgia’s expense).

Romania v Samoa: Samoa by 6 – just because I don’t have a clue, but Samoa seem to better at the moment.

Scotland v Argentina: Argentina by 3 – Did Scotland blow a gasket against the Kiwis last week? Argentina have some good scalps this year and will look to take a Scottish one on their own turf.

England v New Zealand: New Zealand by 9 – don’t think it’ll be a shellacking, but the Kiwis are cruising this November tour after a dodgy start against Japan.

Ireland v Australia: Ireland by 8 Aussies are one from three, but all their matches have been single point affairs so far. Ireland will put a bit of distance on the scoreboard, but not that much.

France v Japan: France by 24 Japan won’t be as bad as they were against England, but they also don’t have the ability to step up and close the gap that much either. France for win 13 on the trot and getting within touching distance of some serious records.

Overdone and slighted shredded? Sounds like England’s preparations for the 6N!

  11. After a looooonnng time JBP finally finished his foreword and someone else started reading which was a relief. There’s so much in there that you could rip to shreds (“the divinity of the individual” anyone?) and it highlighted how frustrating it was when journalists would misquote him. Like, just engage with what he’s actually saying, it’s enough.

Anyway, I saw this today and laughed:

Should ban Bread of Heaven too , Christian extremist propaganda right there.
And this one, and the flag is a bit tarnished by racist film I reckon. Bound to offend someone.

  14. Sbt – tbh I was expecting Sweet Chariot to be banned first and I hope the Welsh fans belt out Delilah throughout the 6ns.

The lyrics to Delilah really are vile.

  16. Trauma – true. But banning it to deflect from what is happening at the WRU is cynical bullshit.

Craigs – or maybe they’ve realised that Delilah really doesn’t sit well with the current brouhaha.

There is a movement within Country music, the proper country music, not the bullshit about pickup trucks and beers, it’s about a change in the so-called Murder Ballads or Southern Gothic, which are of a time and place.

There is a guy called Dirk Powell who sings

I ain’t playing Pretty Polly or Rosalie McFall
I ain’t playing Knoxville Girl, no, none of them at all
No more tales of women killed by drunken violent men
They don’t deserve their stories told, I won’t raisе my voice again
I ain’t playing Pretty Polly anymore

Thaum, it’s not Country Music, call it singer songwriter acoustic, it’s worth a listen

SBT, oddly enough that Gillian Welch song was the first I thought of when I first heard the Dirk Powell one a couple of years ago

McCloskey to start! And three Ulstermen on the bench.

    But Furlong not available.

Ireland: Keenan; Hansen, Ringrose, McCloskey, Lowe; Sexton, Gibson-Park; Porter, Sheehan, Bealham; Beirne, Ryan; O’Mahony, Van der Flier, Doris.

Replacements: Herring, Healy, O’Toole, Henderson, Conan, Murray, Byrne, Aki.

Ticht, Joan Baez covers Caleb Meyer on the Dark Chords on a Big Guitar album. Thats how I came across Gillian Welch, who I have to say I have developed a bit of a thing for. Her and David Rawlings make just about the perfect couple when it comes down to a pair of acoustic guitars imho.

  26. Thaum – I understand why it’s desirable not to sing it but there hasn’t been any consultation has there? Just ‘shit, we need to do something’. Unless anyone knows otherwise I’m pretty sure that the problem isn’t the Welsh fandom when compared with any other group.

If a consensus was reached then fine but to me it seems cynical. Right thing for the wrong reasons and ultimately hollow IMO.

Every fan second favourite anthem, The Marseillaise, has pretty dire words too. “That an impure blood quenches the thirst of our fields! ” for instance. I know it refers to a foreign invasion during the revolution, but still.
Let people sing what they want, be it Swing low or Mathilda, it’s not such a big deal.

I think there’s a big difference between singing about your historical enemies in a national anthem, mythologically, and singing about killing your partner.

My favourite bit of La Marseillaise is en garde, citoyens!. Compare and contrast to the horrible English anthem.

Flower of Scotland is also fairly bloodthirsty, but is a cracking tune. The Star-Spangled Banner is both horrible and bloodthirsty (and unsingable).

Don’t think anyone really thought Halfpenny would make it on to the field, he’s pulled out of quite a few games a day or two before. Think he’s pretty much done really. Then again I thought half of our bench were done some years ago and still think they probably should be, but there they are…

A little under half of me thinks we’re going to win the Championship by the way. The rest thinks we’ll be fifth or sixth. It would be really dull (and unlike Wales) to be just a little bit better than last year.

Craigs – controversial. At least 2.5 of the 4 nations would dispute that. And, if that were the case, then the English team should find their own bloody anthem and stop torturing everyone.

Anyway, there is going to be a new post shortly. Yes, really!

I would have thought this would be the most common view.

GSTQ/K very obviously is the UK anthem, not sure on what grounds that could be disputed.
