Got caught napping by the bank holidays and have only just realised that today is Friday, and there is European Cup rugby on! So imagine a long and hilariously funny post here. Or just skip to the fixtures.
Onna telly this weekend
Showing matches that are televised in the UK and Ireland or on popular subscription services. Bold indicates that it’s on a free to view channel. Times are in the UK zone, so adjust as necessary.
Some whiskies are distilled thrice, Bruichladdich have one that’s distilled 4 times. Auchentoshan have some triple distilled ones, including their American Oak which I really like.
“Each to their own” is possibly the dullest phrase in the English language because that’s the end of any discussion.
I like Laphroaig and all the other big peaty monsters from Islay. I like the smoke and the seaweed flavours. These go really well with Coca Cola – don’t knock it till you try it. I remember saying this once in the whisky tasting group we used to have and I was roundly met with WTAF? looks. Then when revered whisky writer Dave Broom came to take to us one night he said that his favourite drink was Lagavulin and coke. This is not the way to drink it every time, just now and again. I suppose the thing is drink it how you like it, there are no laws pertaining to it.
The only whisky I don’t like is the bland stuff, the stuff that you get in supermarkets carrying big distillery names with “Captain’s Reserve” or some such bollocks on the box. Oh and I don’t care for grain whisky, it tastes like liquid pencil shavings to me, but I guess that’s nothing that a hefty mixer of Irn Bru and ice can’t fix.
Last day in lovely Maputo. City of many contrasts: the recent, rapid arrival of the big oil companies and the hotels, conference centres, fancy restaurants and shiny 4x4s they and their lawyers, bankers, consultants (except me, natch) and assorted hangers-on demand, juxtaposed against the continued grinding poverty of the other 90+ percent of the population.
It’s a very relaxed city and the people are relaxed, friendly, welcoming and proud of their beautiful country – as they should be. I just hope that when the gas flows, the money is used judiciously to improve the lives of the people, not pamper the elite.
Refit – I think Ulster may have decided that yellow is their home kit now. The Ulster flag (ie the nine counties) has a yellow background; it’s the six-counties fleg that has a white background.
First rugby I can watch in a while. Quins very good value for their deserved lead at HT, 28/12.
Bordeaux lethargic and sloppy but mostly without composure. Cannot see a reversal during the 2nd half, unless the heat knocks the English off.
Excellent game.
SLMCF, ,This is Bordeaux Begles we are talking about. Two days ago, their coach, Yannick Bru said he expected them to play like shit today as they played wonderful stuff last week. They’ve been that erratic this season.

One question that will decide whether I trust your recommendation, BB: do you like Laphroaig?

Although I’m off to me bed now, so will have to read your answer tomorrow. :-)

I must have had some at some point Thaum, but I honestly can’t remember. I have had peaty Islay malts but they’re not my go to whiskies.

All right, then I might be inclined to trust your judgement!

We are getting brutalised by the tiny bite of penalties. 13-7 now.

The try in the 36th minute isn’t helping either.

I have to say, it’s very confusing having Ulster playing in yellow. Could they not just have both teams wear their home kits?

Ulster turn down three points to kick for the corner, which has not been very successful this year. A try is given, but it looks like it’s held up.

It’s a try! And a conversion! 20-14 at HT.

Thaum – according to the Ulster shop, White is home, Blue is away and Yellow is Europe. Can’t miss out fleecing the fans for a few more quid.
