More Fun with Our European Friends

As I’m w*rking this evening, only time for a quick update on the televised matches.

The last person who criticised the brevity of my posts.*

  1. Aus finish the 1st session in the D/N Test in Perth on 76/2 with Warner caught and bowled by Neil Wagner a few minutes before’Tea’. Smith and Labuschagne at the crease – top two run scorers in Tests in 2019.

    Not that anyone cares. Sniff.

Going oot in a bit to remind people to vote at all. Only the ones who have said they’re going to vote the right way obviously.

I miss those aggressive people who used to stand outside the polling station demanding to see your polling card who would get upset if you refused.

    Do they still do that?

Round here they just ask nicely and slightly wearily.

The Waterhead ward Labour Party members stood outside Moorside Cricket Club in the mid 90s could have done with learning some people lessons from your lot.

Where I live now there’s no campaigning or canvassing anyway as it’s a Tory shoo-in.

OT, I’ve just voted and when I came out of the school hall there were two people engaged in a friendly discussion, the one with the Green Party rosette asked to see my polling number on my card and the one with the Labour rosette noted it down. As I turned away the Green guy said to the Labour woman, I quite like Emily Thornbury, I think she’d be good.

I have a sense of foreboding about today.

I guess it doesn’t matter now, but something really bothered me on the waste of paper that is the Brexit Party bumf that came through the door, it claimed that 52% of the electorate voted to leave the EU, and I’ve heard Tories repeat that lie.

37.4% of the electorate voted to leave the EU.

I voted for this guy cos a) he’s the only local* one and b) I like the fact he runs a water based adhesives manufacturer. He doesn’t pontificate about environmental stuff he actually tries to do summat about it.

*The BNP guy might also be local but I wasted no time finding out. Yes, we have a BNP candidate standing.

One of our candidates is Bob Dobbs, his image has been around Brighton for years, on cafes and gig flyers etc.
He is standing as an independent, despite having been assassinated in San Francisco in 1984

  13. Australia 182/2, with Marnus Labuschagne on 80 and approaching 1,000 runs for the calendar year. I’m not the rest of South Africa’s Test players have managed that between them. What a shame. And England arrive on our shores next weekend. England and Wales. It’s like a Lions tour, especially if Eion Morgan makes the side. And typically, under representation from Scotland. Cough.

I really did laugh out loud at the last sentence in the Graun’s Trump v Greta story. As you probably know Greta Thunberg has been named Time magazine’s Person of the Year, with her on the front cover, Trump has decided, via twitter, that it’s appropriate for POTUS to bully a 16 year old climate change activist from the platform afforded him by his office.

The last line in the Graun story reads, “Trump once had a fake Time magazine cover with his own picture framed and hanging in his office in Trump Tower.”

I saw that a friend of mine had posted on FB that he was abstaining today. We were all very politically minded when we were growing up and he was even more left wing than I was, so it came as a bit of a surprise.

There followed dozens of messages entreating him not to give up, that he must get down there and vote.

He has just come back and said, “No you divots, I meant I’m not going to the pub after work.”
