The Welsh: What Are They Like?

Entertaining. Indefatigable. Bloody-minded, hard as nails (well, obviously there is an obstructed view).

When Mark Williams (pictured) won the World Snooker Championship in 2018, he stripped off for the ensuing press conference, as he had promised to do.

This year, he has promised to run naked down the M4 if he wins.

Given that he’s 51, perhaps he should borrow Andy Powell’s golf buggy instead.

But this is why Welsh rugby can and will rise above their current crisis, and hopefully with all four regions somehow surviving the mess. Welsh sides are currently Irish teams’ banana peels in the URC.

While full houses at Welsh stadia have been a rarity in recent years, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau sung with full heart at the Millenium Stadium still manages to bring a bit of unexplained grit to the eyes of this non-Welsh person (well, full disclosure: I had a half-Welsh granny).

And, to add the icing to the cake, the Welsh don’t vote for Tories. Hopefully they won’t vote for the even more repulsive Reform in May either.

Hey Thaum, thanks for pics. For reference, I grew up around horses, great grand parents on two sides, rn coaching inns and hired out and traded horses. Hate the fucking things. Especially ex=racing thorobreds, stupid animals. However, in a later life, some 25 years back, I had the pleasure of getting acquainted with some very intelligent and likeable working horses, percheron, welsh cob, ( my mum and sister both had mountain cobs, hmmmm ) and Ardennes,
different species. Thorobred/Arab means horse with lobotomy to me.

  3. Thauma, the horses and greyhounds are stunning animals – no objection to them at all. It’s my abject inability to win money betting on them that makes me ratty and despise them (racing, not the beasts) as forms of ‘entertainment’ or sports.

Excuuuuse me, SBT, but Thoroughbreds are not stupid animals! Flighty, unpredictable and highly strung, yes. But actually quite clever for horses. :-)

Always loved the Gary Larson cartoon with the horse parliament where someone’s voted ‘aye’ for the first time ever.

Saints vs Bristol. I’ll be disappointed if there aren’t at least 100 points in this game…

Well, I don’t know why Glasgow didn’t see yellow for the tackle in the air of Kok, who went arse over tit and only didn’t land on his head by luck.

We have put out a very second team, presumably saving ourselves for the Montpellier match.

  24. Cardiff 12-7 up against the Stormers, whose defence is so passive it looks like a 60s San Francisco peace march. 12-10 with a penalty, but from the kick off the Stormers concede another penalty.

Glasgow’s yellow remaining a yellow despite a shoulder directly to head. ‘Low degree of danger.’

Even a man up, we are doing nothing but defending, bar the one score.

  28. Kemeny just waltzes through the Bristol ‘defence’ and that’s 50 up before half time. Apparently my ‘Bru prediction of Saints by 15 was optimistic. 54-14

  29. And another Cardiff try. Stormers really are too passive on defence. Knock on in the build up saves the Stormers. Stormers scrum is beastly and lets them get out of trouble. They won’t get past the semis though. Not with this defence.

  31. They really need to be handing out red cards for head contact, force players to change their behaviour.

Saints score their 9th with the clock in the red, plus a yellow for Bristol 5, Batley – leaving a shoulder in after the ball has been passed back up the pitch. 61-14 at half time.

I know I joked about 100 points, but we are up to 75 at half time, Saints getting 61 of them. Poor Genge was almost in tears as he walked off. Poor Refit might actually be in tears just now.

Glasgow have scored again. Our defence has been immense, but when you spend all bloody match defending your 22, there is bound to be a leak here and there.

To add insult to injury, it was McBeth who scored, who shouldn’t be on the bloody field at all, as Refit said.

  35. Draconian is the word I was trying to think of, in relation to head contact. No mitigation, head contact and you’re gone. Change behaviour, get coaches to teach proper tackling.

Draco’s not around in Cardiff so the Stormers player who picked up a yellow for head contact will not be executed and will instead be back in a few minutes.
