The Welsh: What Are They Like?

Entertaining. Indefatigable. Bloody-minded, hard as nails (well, obviously there is an obstructed view).

When Mark Williams (pictured) won the World Snooker Championship in 2018, he stripped off for the ensuing press conference, as he had promised to do.

This year, he has promised to run naked down the M4 if he wins.

Given that he’s 51, perhaps he should borrow Andy Powell’s golf buggy instead.

But this is why Welsh rugby can and will rise above their current crisis, and hopefully with all four regions somehow surviving the mess. Welsh sides are currently Irish teams’ banana peels in the URC.

While full houses at Welsh stadia have been a rarity in recent years, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau sung with full heart at the Millenium Stadium still manages to bring a bit of unexplained grit to the eyes of this non-Welsh person (well, full disclosure: I had a half-Welsh granny).

And, to add the icing to the cake, the Welsh don’t vote for Tories. Hopefully they won’t vote for the even more repulsive Reform in May either.

Andrew Trimble’s just been told that so far it’s been a good day for Irish rugby, and what are Ulster’s chances of following them to Bilbao? His response: ‘I’m not sure that many Ulster or Munster fans would describe this as a good day.’

Well, I agree it was a terrible tackle, but I think Stockdale hit his own head on F-W’s shoulder first. Jacob is becoming more of a liability.

Exeter score, and I hope that’s all they get off the yellow.

‘Suplex’ is a new one on me: does it mean swinging him round by the head? Probably deserved the yellow just for that.

  27. Thauma the closest I can come to explaining it is the sound of zhuzh as in ‘zhuzh it up a bit’. The rest would be like Juan playing for an Aussie cricket team, with the obligatory ‘o’ at the end of a name to turn it into a nickname. So Zh-uarn-o or near enough!

A sort of soft J like a French one for jamais, then? Got it, thanks!

Mark Allen’s just won a helluva frame on the black. It’s GO for the Ulstermen today! He’s playing Wu Yize, who his previous opponent described as ‘playing the Playstation’.

  34. You could always sneak sachets of booze into the stadium, surely? I went to a Currie Cuo Final years ago at Ellis Park with my mate Dave. He managed the pub I frequented so we got pretty plastered before the match.

Dave then hauled out two of those clowns hats with the bells on them. When I refused to wear it, he said “look inside.” He’d carefully sewn and taped miniatures of rum and brandy into the lining, so we only had to order mix in the stadium. Worked a treat, although my only memory of the match was Andre Joubert chipping the Lions defence and regathering to score and seal the match. Bastard.

  35. Which reminds me. Couldn’t find Dave after the match to get home so started walking, absolutely blootered. Somewhere in Hillbrow, one of the most dangerous places in Joburg, a guy stopped me and asked where I was going. My initial reaction was he wanted to mug me, but then why the casual conversation. I told him where I was headed, confirmed I had cash and he called his mate, who had a taxi (long before Uber). They dropped me off at the pub, where Dave was in full flight. Again. Forever grateful to that kind soul and his mate!

Low quality game in Montpellier. 10/0 for the hosts vs the Dragons after 30 minutes. Am surprised that Montpellier are fieldind a B team for a semi-final.

I was lazy and kept watching with one eye. Final score 18/12 for Montpellier. Dreadful game. Wish both teams lost and Ulster were directly given the cup.

Excellent game, too bad both these entertaining teams can’t make it to the final. Maybe the loser should replace Montpellier in the small cup.

We’re lucky here as the game is shown both on FTV ( public TV, free to air) but also on BeinTV, (which costs 15€ a month, cancellable and renewable any time). So you can choose the least annoying commentary.

  48. We had Dayglo, who has apparently forgotten anything he ever knew about the game of rugby, plus consistently talks over the ref mic so misses all the calls and makes his own up.

Goode, who is incredibly one-eyed and persists with the conspiracy theory that the TMO only has access to what the French TV director shows him – excusing Whitehouse for being asleep for the entire match – rather than separate feeds from all the cameras.

And Harrison, who’s just an excitable puppy bouncing around and saying how great EVERYTHING is.

Refit, I feel sorry for you.
FTV commentary is basically like having a one eyed fan seating next to you, talking all the time, thankfully balanced by the knowledgeable but dull Yachvili.
BeinTv is more fun, more knowledgeable, much fairer to the opposition. A bit like Canal+, but Canal only shows T14 and some SH competitions.
I wish you gave us back Benjamin Keyser though.

The mister turned the match off as soon as it was over, saying, Those fuckers gave me a headache.
